THE SAGA OF GOSTA BERLING (1924) - Cast: Greta Garbo, Lars Hanson, Jenny Hasselqvist, Gerda Lundequist, Ellen Cederstrom, Mona Martenson. STELLA DALLAS (1925) - [Full Program] - Belle Bennett, Ronald Colman, Lois Moran, Alice Joyce, Jean Hersholt, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Directed by Henry King. ~ ~ ~ Classic tale of a well meaning mother (Belle Bennett) who comes to the painful realization she is preventing her daughter from having a better life. Direction, scenario and acting are superb. One of the finest films of the silent era. ~ ~ ~ Includes shorts, slideshows, rare footage from our screening room and a 12-minute comment on the making of Stella Dallas. Color-tinted, 167 minutes. THAT CERTAIN THING (1928) - Cast: Viola Dana, Ralph Graves, Burr McIntosh, Aggie Herring, Carl Gerard, Syd Crossley. Directed by Frank Capra. ~ ~ ~ Molly Kelly (Viola Dana) seeks a way to get rich after her new husband (Ralph Graves) is disinherited. The "Capra touch" is clearly evident in this silent comedy as a number of scenes seem to foreshadow sequences from his later sound films. 81 minutes. MORE

THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1921) - Cast: Douglas Fairbanks, Adolphe Menjou, Barbara La Marr, Marguerite de la Motte, Nigel de Brulier, Mary MacLaren, Leon Bary, George Siegmann, Eugene Pallette, Boyd Irwin, Thomas Holding, Sidney Franklin, Charles Stevens, Willis Robards, Lon Poff, Walt Whitman, Charles Belcher. Directed by Fred Niblo. ~ ~ ~ Doug Fairbanks leaps, climbs, and duels in this lavish swashbuckler. In his efforts to join the King's Musketeers, D'Artagnan (Fairbanks) fights to protect the honor of Queen Anne of Austria (Mary MacLaren), matches wits with the beautiful Milady de Winter (Barbara La Marr) and pursues the winsome Constance Bonacieux (Marguerite de la Motte). An energetic epic with great period detail. Shorts included. 161 minutes. MORE

THE TOLL GATE (1920) - Cast: William S. Hart, Anna Q. Nilsson, Joseph Singleton, Jack Richardson, Richard Headrick. Directed by Lambert Hillyer. ~ ~ ~ William S. Hart plays notorious outlaw Black Deering, a robber and killer, who discovers he can't go straight. A dark and serious western, this film contains themes one would expect to find in a film made in the 1960s rather than the 1920s. Color-tinted, 75 minutes. MORE

THE UNCHASTENED WOMAN (1925) - [Full Program] - Cast: Theda Bara, Wyndham Standing, Eileen Percy, John Miljan, Dale Fuller, Harry Northrup, Mayme Kelso. Directed by James King. ~ ~ ~ Theda Bara plays a respectable woman who finds it necessary to pretend she is a vamp. Theda's last feature film contains echoes of her screen image from the teens. ~ ~ ~ Includes shorts, slideshows, footage from our screening room, a silent era trailer and a Sunrise Comment. THE WHITE SISTER (1923) - [Full Program] - Cast: Lillian Gish, Ronald Colman, Gail Kane, J. Barney Sherry, Charles Lane. Directed by Henry King. ~ ~ ~ The story of a woman (Lillian Gish) who discovers a new meaning in life after losing all she once possessed, only to be tempted to return to her former self. An excellent example of the silent photoplay with fine performances by Lillian Gish and Ronald Colman. Directed by Henry King, who would go on to make Stella Dallas two years later.
